draft/plan of evaluation

1.        In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?
FRONT COVER
With the front cover it has a clear masthead. BiggeR&Better implies that it is one of the greatest magazines out there and it is easily recognisable. It suggests that there is only the biggest and best things in the magazine which shows the reader that they would be reading about quality stuff if they choose to purchase my magazine. My readers know what they are going to get in this magazine because R&B is in red whereas the rest of the title is in blue. Therefore they realise it is an R&B related magazine. Also the colours blue and red can imply how my magazine can appeal to anyone as the blue can appeal to a man and the red can appeal to a woman. They are both social colours which represent the social side of things. My model is appearing as an up-and-coming rapper and is set to appeal to the fans of the underground scene. As he is a rapper that also covers the Rap bit in my magazine. The caption ‘Jay-Anti bursts onto the scene with new track’ connotes that he has made a smash hit that can appeal to fans maybe not just in the underground scene but a song so huge that it has made him front cover of my magazine. This will appeal to more and more music fans. My model is wearing a hoodie which the rap fans can relate to and he looks like an ordinary guy. When fans can relate to someone they tend to like them more so that means that more people will pick up my magazine if it features someone like him. There are also different cover lines which feature Jay Z, 50 Cent, Kendrick Lamar and Kelly Rowland. These cover lines add the gossip side which is essential to any magazine and appeal to all the fans because they are all titans in the music industry and therefore any article with them is a big story. I’ve added our twitter name and website because any magazine nowadays has to have technology to further develop their status. With the world of technology like it is today, the electronic extensions allow us to be more up to date with everything that is happening currently. There is also a cover line which says ‘win tickets to summer jam’. Summer jam is an annual hip-hop concert that happens in America which has all the biggest acts in the world to perform and people love winning free stuff so to win that would be huge for any fan. My magazine is £1.99 because as my magazine is aimed at around people between 16-25yrs old there is no point in selling something for extreme amounts. People are looking for the cheapest things about and to have something cost under £2.00 is more appropriate. I have a house style of using red, blue, black and white colours throughout my magazine.

 CONTENTS
my contents page is simple but effective. It has both features which are specific to this issue only but regulars which occurs every single issue. It has pictures of two of the people who will feature in the magazine and the audience will ‘recognise’. They are both wearing white which links to the colours and works with the house style I have created for the contents page. The features include artists like Eminem, Alicia Keys, Nicki Minaj and Dizzee Rascal. They all have separate storylines which I think would be interesting to different types of people. Other stories of my features include the things that you see on the front cover like an interview with Jay-Anti which is my first story which makes sense as it is the main cover on the magazine. In the regulars we have thinks like all the different charts. These include top albums, hottest tracks and so on. They are the normal charts that you would expect a music magazine to list. As this magazine was produced around Christmas time there is a Christmas competition where fans can win lots of festive prizes for themselves or loved ones. There is normally always a competition but the theme changes every month according to what is happening each month. I think putting something in where fans will win prizes is clever because it adds an extra special feel to the magazine as fans believe they can win something which gives an extra motive to buy the magazine. We also have horoscopes because I believe that a lot of people want to know what the ‘stars have predicted’ and also I’ve added an extra thing just for the month where people can find out which celebrity has the same birthday as them. People like to know about celebrities and they can maybe compare themselves to which celebrity has the same birthday as them.

DPS
My DPS is a question and answer with the main model on my front page ‘Jay-Anti’. As he is an up and coming rapper not many people would know a lot about him so it is just a bit of an insight to him. The dark background gives sort of a dark/mysterious tone to the spread. The title consists of me calling him the ‘hottest in the game’ which makes the reader more interested to see if they would think the same thing. The font for the answers is in italic which shows his direct speech to each of my questions. The picture of his hands to his head shows him rapping and this shows how he is serious about his rap game and he does it for the love of it and knows he’s good. He shows the attitude of a rap artist. The second picture shows him doing an ‘Illuminati pose’ which sparks controversy and every rapper needs controversy to become more talked about and more publicised. My artist is wearing blue which links with his answers and the colours I have used; red, blue, white and black shows the house style throughout my magazine.

2.      How does your media product represent particular social groups?
The audience of my magazine are for 16-25yr old. The younger age groups of society are the ones that mostly listen to R&B and hip hop. The price is low so that means my audience does not get a high or even any income. My model who is a male teenager is wearing a hoodie so he is coming across as a bit of a stereotype but I think my audience would like it as he looks like a person who can relate to them.

3.      What kind of media institution might distribute your media product and why?
I would like IPC to publish my magazine because they are the leading publishers in the magazine industry. This means that I will be able to get the best quality publishing from them. Also I realised that they do not publish a R&B/Hip gop magazine which means there is a gap in the market for me. I would like to have the magazine available for online subscription on the website and maybe an app so people can be up to date with current worldlya ffairs and other things which are available within the magazine.

4.      Who would be the audience for your media product?
The audience of my magazine are for 16-25yr old. The younger age groups of society are the ones that mostly listen to R&B and hip hop. My audience are most likely to be wearing clothes such as hoodies, jeans, t-shirts, trainers e.t.c. The kind of movies they like to watch are comedies, action films, horrors and so on. The kind of people they look up to are celebrities such as Beyonce, Jay Z, Eminem e.t.c because they are inspirational as they started from a background just like my target audience and now they're at the top.

5.        How did you attract/address your audience?
- colour schemes
- different fonts
- model/interviews
- cover stories they may be interested in
6.        What have you learnt about technologies from the process of constructing this product?
- photoshop- knew the basics went more indepth
- indesign- didn’t know how to use before but now I do
- blogger- best website to blog stuff. Works with google/well known
- prezi- easy to make different plans. More clear than powerpoint.
- timetoast- helps you stay on top of your schedule.

Looking back at your preliminary task, what do you feel you have learnt in the progression from it to the full product?
- photoshop
-indesign
-how to use the cameras/- DSLR cameras- one of the best cameras to use
-how media is important in the world

Audience feedback for my music magazine

'I like how you used a variety of colours for your front cover. This makes the text shown on your magazine stand out as its colour shows contrast with the black background. I also like how you highlighted the free giveaway on the front cover by placing it in its own box as its very I catching and stands out against the rest of the text on the page. As well as that, I like how your model is wearing clothes that are appropriate for the magazine and its genre. However, I do think that the front cover can be improved by using different fronts for the cover lines and masthead and editing the size of the gaps between words in the cover lines. Another thing that I think can be improved is how the image of your model is edited into the background. At the moment you can easily tell that the image is edited in poorly.' James Taasin on my Music Magazine Front Cover

From this I have properly edited my image and made it better. I have also improved the sizing of the gaps between the words.

DPS

I believe this is a very effective and well presented DPS. You have the title in the top left with two pictures and the rest text. The first picture shows him clearly rapping and this shows what type of music he represents. The second picture shows the Illuminati pose which suggests which type of group he is affiliated with. The layout of each column of writing looks professionally done. Doing my DPS on InDesign allowed me to do this as it shows rulers and columns for me to measure the space in between each column. The actual content of the DPS is a Q&A between me posing as an interviewer and him. This gives the reader an insight to get to know him better.

CONTENTS PAGE

This is a simple but effective contents page. It has pictures of both my models looking out at my readers inspiring them to carry on turning the pages. I have two categories; features and regulars. The features are things that are only specific to this issue of the magazine alone. The regulars are things that occur every month for every issue that the magazine has published. You notice that it is professional in the sense that my page numbers go up quite a bit and a lot of pages throughout my magazine suggest that there is a wide range of content within the product. The black background has carried on like the front cover as it is a house style and constant giving a mysterious edgy feel to this issue of my magazine. The website is again underneath the title reminding the reader that there is content available online. Doing my Contents Page on Photoshop allowed me to have many different layers whether it be picture or text and it allowed me to move each layer to where I wanted it to be.

FRONT COVER

This is my front cover. The main person in my front cover is my model. He is looking straight at the reader which makes him look as if he is trying to connect to them. He is placed just underneath the title pointing up towards the masthead which makes the audience believe that he is now something that is inevitably going to get bigger and better if he is not already there. I have placed cover lines with page numbers underneath which show how big my magazine is and it shows the different people that also feature in my magazine. I have included that it is 'Issue 41' of my magazine along the barcode so people know how long my magazine has been running for and that it is being successful. On top of the barcode is the reasonable price of £1.99 as it is cheap and my audience know they are getting a bargain. I have included something that my readers can win in a separate box so that it catches my readers attention straightaway. I have also included a website so that it looks legitimate and professional. Doing my Front Cover on Photoshop allowed me to have many different layers whether it be picture or text and it allowed me to move each layer to where I wanted it to be.

These are the various pictures i have taken of my main model and one picture of a secondary model i have used. There are some different shot types i have used such as medium close ups, close ups, wide shots, mid shots and so on. The style i am going for is a rap artist with attitude and confidence and i believe he comes across like that through some of my photos. the secondary artist is posing as someone else who is going to feature in my magazine.

'Your proposal is good, you clearly know what you are writing about and who you are writing for, this leads me to believe that you will not have many if not any problems while making your magazine.'

I believe that i have enough on my proposal to start making my magazine therefore i have not changed anything.

DRAFT COPY OF DPS

Jay Anti is an up and coming rapper who is set to take the UK rap scene by storm. His name is going to be remembered for a long time. The hype over him hasn’t gone unnoticed; underground kings such as Ghetts have described him as ‘one of the best around’ and Krept and Konan believe he could ‘compete with anybody in the rap game’. I caught up with him to see how he’s coping with bursting onto the scene.

What’s your aspirations for the future?
I don’t want to settle for second best. I believe I can go all the way. There’s a bit of a gap in the scene at the moment, with a few rappers stepping off the pace, but I’m going to make sure that I can grasp at the opportunity to work my way up. Once people start recognising my talent, they will realise that I am not one of them joke rappers that come on the scene for a bit, diss a few people and step off again. I’m here for the long run.

Who are your role models?
I look up to a few people. Someone that I believe has done a great job is Skepta. Not a lot of people know but he went toe to toe with Kanye at one point. Lyrically, Skepta is on a different level. I see what he’s done and I think if I go all the way like he has it means I have done well. Obviously, Kendrick is up there. I liked the way he brought something new to the rap game. His verse on control killed the rap game and he wasn’t afraid to speak his mind like some of the rappers today. That’s how I am. Jay Z and Kanye are the kings in hip hop. No one can touch them because of the power they have. Both of them are outspoken.

Has 2013 been a good year or bad year for hip hop/rap?
When you think about all the album releases that have were going to come out this year, A$AP ROCKY, Jay Z, Pusha T, Kendrick Lamar, A$AP Ferg, J Cole, Drake and so on, it looked it would be a big year. But to be honest, it wasn’t all that. Pusha T’s album in my opinion was album of the year but no one even recognised it. It was a good year for the critics.

How would you describe yourself?
I’m anti, that’s where the name comes from. Don’t get on my bad side because if something is going to happen, it will happen to you. I am determined to keep myself in this game and make sure I conquer it, there is nothing or no one that will be able to stop me achieving it.

How does it feel to be recognised as such a great player in the game?
I don’t let myself become light headed with compliments like some of the fake rappers would do. That’s the difference between me and them, I don’t need someone to tell me that I’m great, because i’ve always known that myself. All it is, is that someone big has heard me and it does feel good; knowing that someone who I’ve been listening to is doing the same thing back...but that’s it, that is all it is.

What’s next for Anti Jay?

My EP is coming out in March, and it’s going to be big. There are big name collaborations on it. Original songs, remixes, you name it. It’s going to be the biggest step of my career so far, and I’m looking forward to it. We’ve nearly completed it but we just have a few finishing touches to put on it.

magazine newstand task

I went to a newsagents and took a picture of how the music magazines are laid out. i realised that the magazines were ordered according to their genres. for example the country magazines are together and the rock ones and so on. this makes it easier for you to see the competition between them and allows the reader to pick out the one that stands out more or appeals to them better.
I can also see that the popular magazines that have large mastheads are placed at the front whereas the other ones are placed at the back. this shows the lest popular magazines at the back need something to catch the readers attention as they do not get as much publicity as other magazines. they need that extra edge to their magazine to attract the audience because the magazines at the front which are more recognisable find it easier to persuade the buyer because of their company name.

MAGAZINE DISTRIBUTION
All magazines have publishers. they deal with the shape and design of a magazine. they also work on how the magazine should be advertised. advertising your magazine is a big part as it is what attracts the reader to notice your magazine from the rest.
Music magazines also can be ezines. Ezines are electronic magazines which are like normal magazines but just online. they are different from normal magazine websites as the viewer can turn the pages in the magazines, see all the adverts e.t.c.
Most magazines today have apps that you can find on your phones and tablets such as Iphone or Ipad. they can be linked to the magazine by having features on them such as games, freebies and so on.
Most magazines today have social networking accounts on websites like twitter and facebook. this allows them to appeal to a younger generation and it is easier to share something with the world on these sites. it allows further development for the magazine.

College magazine evaluation feedback

'I think that the cover lines are creative and if it was a real magazine I would pick it up. The masthead is bright and bold which makes it clear what the magazine is about. However, I think that the cover lines could have been colourful and you could have included the price of the magazine on the front cover. I also think that picture could have been resized so the image was clear.' Billie Casimir on my college magazine front cover

I believe that the good things about my magazine is the fact that the cover lines i have used are very realistic and they attract the readers in the right way. the masthead clearly attracts people as it is big and bold. however i do think that i need to make it more professional as i need to edit my picture and include more things on my front cover. One thing i changed due to the feedback was putting the price on the front cover, as it is only 99p this means that it is very affordable to my audience who are tudents.

3 key points i need to develop for my music magazine are:
- make sure i have more colourful cover lines that attract the reader's attention more

- make sure i edit my pictures properly
- do not forget to put the price on my magazine.

Case studies

CASE STUDY 1

With the masthead it is behind Rihanna but you can still tell that it is ‘Billboard’ magazine. This magazine is one of the biggest music magazines that there is so once you have made it on that you know that you’re quite famous. The font is not very formal suggesting it is more of a social magazine. This could imply that they want to be more informal and appeal to just normal people, not discriminating and just focusing on one group of people. The red and green colours in the title could show that it is gender neutral. Again this shows that they are not discriminating towards one gender and are appealing their magazine towards everyone.
The main image of Rihanna can be seen as quite provocative as she is appealing to the male readers and she’s looking right at them. It is very sexual and it is like she is enticing you in to pick up the magazine and read about her life.
However, the caption ‘my fans don’t really know who I am’ can be seen as the gossip side which could be targeting her fans as they can get to know ‘the real her’. Also it could be seen as critics not knowing her too so she could be telling them to reassess their opinions of her.
The main image of Rihanna is the first thing the people see. Her fiery passion could be represented with her red hair and red lipstick which symbolise lust, passion and fire.

When looking at Billboard's contents pages the layout and structure is very clear and well set out. This makes it easier for the reader to find the specific stories that they want to read or it gives an insight as to what they can expect from the magazine.
The left side lists each page within the magazine, yet to the right the main features are outlined.  This area also includes images making the overall page much more visually appealing.
The red, yellow, blue and green colours that have been used in the masthead are presented throughout the page as well creating a continuing theme.
For the contents title, it is a stylistic font which has also been repeated throughout the page in various areas. In terms of image, the cowboys are aligned neatly against the bottom of the box whilst the text works neatly around their hats

In this double page spread the image has been stretched over both sides of the double page spread. This makes the picture stand out more and can show that the unusual layout style could link to an unusual story.
The pink and black from the image has been created as a theme throughout the spread with quotes. Colours being a continuing theme has once again been used just like the contents page which could show that the magazine always sticks to this specific layout rule.
In many magazines such as Vanity Fair the first letter of the first word is always massive but in this article in Billboard magazine the whole first sentence is massive which could be seen as more appealing and trying to show that it is an important story.
The stylish font could connote class and sophistication. It could show that the text is powerful and means a lot and because it is quite a formal font it could show that the text is reliable so the reader sub-consciously believes the text.

 CASE STUDY 2

When looking at this cover, it initially strikes you as feminine due to the pink background, female model and flower props. This could suggest that this specific article is more aimed at women.
The yellow subheadings on the left is linked to the yellow flower props so they like to match the colour scheme.
When looking at the image, the lighting casts no shadows giving connotations of pure and perfect. The fact that her skin and make-up could be seen as faultless also gives connotations to perfection. She is staring at you in order to draw you in and entice you to pick up the magazine.
The feature artist text "Katy Perry" is the largest feature text as she is the main attraction. It also stands out as it is a completely new font, creating a distinct new identity for itself.

This is a contents page of a classical magazine because the pictures on the contents page are more mature and there are various instruments on it which are part of the orchestra. The contents page is more organized and it is not over crowded with text and big pictures, the target audience of the magazine looking from the contents page is for a mature audience so it looks like it is for people aged 19-45 because young teenagers don't tend to listen or be interested in classical music or anything classical. The way that the magazine has been set out and the pictures used on the magazine reflects the target audience of the magazine because the layout of the magazine is organized and it is not messy and all over the place and teenagers and children tend to be messy rather than adults. The information on the contents page is set out in rows which shows that the magazine is for a mature audience and the pictures link in with the layout and target audience of the magazine because you don't see teenage rappers in street clothing; the clothes that the people are wearing in the magazine are more formal like suits.
This page-spread is neatly broken up by image and text. This could show that this structure is a lot simpler than the design, simply including three columns of text with two images. To break up the overall layout, the use of pink text has been used to mark a specific area. This is more of a typical double page spread as the text and image are separated. The image of the Alexandra Burke being quite free gives various connotations of power and freedom. There is also eye-contact with the audience which shows that she has a direct relationship with the audience.

BILLBOARD MEDIA KIT

The media kit for billboard magazine has a lot of things which will attract the media. Firstly the pictures have very famous and well known celebrities such as Justin Bieber, Katy Perry, Usher and Taylor Swift. As the media love reporting on celebrities this will attract them and show that Billboard has all the best people in the industry. Secondly the slogan underneath the title says 'THE BEST IN MUSIC', this allows Billboard to advertise themselves as being the greatest music magazine around and this too will attract the media. They have a range of different cover lines along the side which takes you to all the different things that they have included within them. This promotes the idea that because they are the best they have a range of things that they have within their magazine and it shows that they may well be the best because of how much they have.

double page spread on file sharing

File sharing downloads-article

ILLEGAL DOWNLOADING: THE TRUE STORY

Alright, admit it! You’ve all illegally downloaded something before. Whether it be music or films, we’ve all done it. But is it really affecting the music industry more than we actually tend to think? Or are all the artists exaggerating just so we buy their music for them to earn more money?

Firstly, let’s look at the different advantages and disadvantages of illegal downloading (AKA file-sharing). Firstly, file-sharing downloads are so much quicker and easier for you to download music or films. Just think about it, you can be at home relaxing on your bed and all of a sudden you think of a song from your childhood memories. You want to listen to it instantly, don’t you? So you get out your mobile phone or laptop, and you download it there and then. Boom! You feel like a child again listening to your music from your past.

However, on the other hand you could argue that with all these different types of file-sharing downloads, you’re bound to have one that is filled with a various amount of viruses. These can in an instant turn your phone or laptop into a type of playground for viruses. They can range from making your phone slow or even messing with the entire system of your laptop, and it’s definitely not worth it just for a film that is going to come on Channel 4 eventually, even if it is a few years down the line.

Do you want to know just how much file-sharing downloads have affected the entertainment industry? From 2004-2009 alone, approximately 30 billion songs were illegally downloaded on file-sharing networks and that leads on to my next statistic. In the decade since file-sharing site Napster emerged in 1999, music sales in the U.S. have dropped 47 percent, from £9.3 billion to £4.9 billion.

Personally, I think that file-sharing downloads are better because as the world is advancing technologically all the time there is no reason for it not to be advancing in the music industry. Nowadays people prefer things to be on their doorstep and so file-sharing downloads are the most popular things out there right now. I have a Blackberry so the website that I use to download music is tubidy.com. All you have to do is type your song into the search box and download mp3, consequently you have your music into your phone ready for you to listen.
